The FDA has issued a recall of the erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil (Viagra), which is sold under the brand name Revatio.
The drug, which is sold under the name Revatio, is the active ingredient in Viagra, and is used by approximately 10 million men in the US.
In a letter to the agency’s health officials, the FDA issued a nationwide recall of the drug. The letter noted that a generic version, Revatio, is being sold in many countries without a prescription.
“Sildenafil (Revatio) is currently being sold in the United States without a prescription, and it is being marketed to consumers who have never taken it,” said FDA spokesman Michael Pearson.
“Sildenafil (Revatio) is a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, and it is important to consumers that they purchase this medication only from reputable sources,” the letter reads.
The FDA says the drug should not be sold to men who have not taken it before and who are not taking it regularly, because the medication can have dangerous side effects.
A spokeswoman for the FDA said that the agency is working on a voluntary recall and will discuss it with a number of affected users and the FDA has not yet issued a decision on the recall.
